Star Wars: The Force Awakens is finally here! I have tickets to see it tomorrow, so no one tell me anything about it!!
In honor of this glorious day, here are links to scripts for the original trilogy, the script for The Phantom Menace (if you feel like this day is too awesome and you need to take it down a notch), George Lucas’s original treatment for the series, and his first draft of A New Hope. Enjoy!
BONUS: A great article by Carson Reeves of Scriptshadow about how reading George Lucas’s original treatment of Star Wars can make you a better screenwriter.
DOUBLE BONUS: An amazing interview in the LA Times with Lawrence Kasdan (writer of The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, and The Force Awakens [in addition to Raiders of the Lost Ark]).
Here are a few choice quotes:
[JJ Abrams is] a really decent guy, and he makes movies the way I try to make movies, which is that it’s a privilege to make a movie and no one should be miserable. You’re spitting in the face of luck if you’re not having a great time.
The thing I always loved about ‘Star Wars’ — and George had this when he made ‘A New Hope’ and J.J. can hook into this very strongly — is that it’s goofy, you know? There are big issues and there’s some philosophy, but it’s basically goofy. And I think ‘The Force Awakens’ is goofy — in the best way.
And with the canon — everyone refers to the canon, but it has zero meaning to me… I cannot get that straight… I’ve written four ‘Star Wars’ movies now, and I don’t know what the canon is.
