I could be just a writer very easily. I am not a writer. I am a screenwriter, which is half a filmmaker… But it is not an art form, because screenplays are not works of art. They are invitations to others to collaborate on a work of art.
A writer who waits for ideal conditions under which to work will die without putting a word on paper.
You can be across the world or in Los Angeles – great writers write. No matter where they are, they find their way to us.
I write as a function. Without it I would fall ill and die. It’s as much a part of one as the liver or intestine, and just about as glamorous.
Fear is the condom of life. It doesn’t allow you to enjoy things.
The character that lasts is an ordinary guy with some extraordinary qualities.
It’s getting harder and harder to make good movies. TV is where the ambiguity and shades of reality live, it’s where stories can be interesting.
I write to give myself strength. I write to be the characters that I am not. I write to explore all the things I’m afraid of.
What I find really interesting is what characters don’t reveal, what people try to conceal. Everybody is always trying to hide something, and you can show that through dialogue.
Writing should be an adventure, shrouded in mystery and uncertainty, blessed with amazing grace.
