Video: First and Final Images

bm

Jacob T. Swinney has put together a five minute video of the first and last frames of 55 different movies shown side by side. Black Snyder discusses the importance of the first and last images in his fifteen beats, and Swinney has shown in this video just how powerful those images can be in practice.

Swinney writes:

What can we learn by examining only the first and final shot of a film? This video plays the opening and closing shots of 55 films side-by-side. Some of the opening shots are strikingly similar to the final shots, while others are vastly different–both serving a purpose in communicating various themes. Some show progress, some show decline, and some are simply impactful images used to begin and end a film.

Here’s the video. After you watch it, I recommend checking out the many other videos produced by Swinney.

  1. Is there a way to get a list of the films shown here? Many I recognized, more I didn’t, and I would love to take a closer look at the films with some of the striking images from this video.

    1. If you go to Jacob T. Swinney’s Vimeo page, he lists the films in the order that they appear in the video. Here is the direct link —
